Yoga Therapy is the use of Yoga Practice to treat any ailment from physical issues such backache or knee pain, chronic disorders like malfunctioning thyroid, allergies to mental and emotional problems such as depression, anxiety and stress, as well as many other ailments. Specific Yoga Asanas and Yoga sequence will be taught to each participant along with other prescriptions as necessary such as meditation, affirmations, dietary recommendations and Pranayama.

The Yoga Therapy Course at the Himalayan Iyengar Yoga Centre is for anyone with any kind of ailment seeking an alternative way of healing themselves. Our Master Teacher Sharat Arora spent 7 years studying with his Guruji BKS Iyengar during which time he assisted Guruji in the daily therapeutic sessions.

This course is not a training in general Iyengar Yoga Therapy but rather an applied and specific course for people suffering with physical or mental health and who wish to cure themselves holistically with the help of a Therapeutic Yoga Practice.

Please note this Yoga Therapy Course IS NOT a teacher training in Therapeutic Yoga but is designed for people suffering an illness or ailment who wish to learn to heal themselves or manage their condition in a holistic way using Yoga Practice, meditation and Pranayama.

Yoga Therapy Program

The Yoga Therapy course lasts 4 weeks. During the first two weeks of the course you will attend the regular 5-Day Courses in the morning and a meditation or Yoga Relaxation session in the afternoons. After the first two weeks there are 1-2 days of diagnosis by Master Teacher Sharat Arora and the senior teacher team.

Following the diagnoses, the second two weeks is the full Yoga Therapy program during which time you will attend special Yoga Therapy sessions with Master Teacher Sharat Arora and his team in the afternoons. The practitioners will get all the tools to maintain a high level of practice away from the Himalayan Iyengar Yoga Centre, whilst travelling or at home, receive in-depth corrections and personal supervision, as well as more subtle indications so as to be able to use the Yoga Asanas to heal themselves more effectively and completely. The participants will be closely monitored and the programs adjusted accordingly.

Participants are expected to be committed during the 4 weeks of the Yoga Therapy Course. Participants may not partake in other therapies during this course such as osteopathy or extreme Ayurvedic treatments like Panchakarma.

Yoga Therapy Course Schedule

Week 1: Wednesday to Sunday
10 – 1: Preparatory 5-Day Course (Introductory),
4 – 4.30: Afternoon Meditation,
Monday-Tuesday: 2 days of Self-Practice

Week 2: Wednesday to Sunday
7 – 10: 5-Day Course (Continuing Students)
4.30 – 6: Afternoon Relaxation Class
Monday-Tuesday: 2 days of Self-Practice

Weeks 3 – 4: Wednesday to Sunday
7 – 10: 5-Day Course* (Continuing Students)
3.30 – 6.30: 5-Day Yoga Therapy Course*
Monday-Tuesday: 2 days of Self-Practice

Healthy Vegetarian food and tea will be provided during the second two weeks of the Therapy Course.

Please note: Classes conducted by Master Teacher Sharat Arora may be recorded by audio, video and photography for the purpose of archiving the teachings as well as the students’ support.

Yoga Therapy is not a quick-fix solution to health problems, in order to succeed in curing oneself it is expected that participants continue their prescribed Iyengar Yoga self-practice at home after the course finishes. Changes in diet and lifestyle may also be suggested and should be followed long-term.

 

Location

This course takes place at the Himalayan Iyengar Yoga Centre in Village Dharamkot, Dharamshala. Dharamkot is nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas and is within walking distance of the cultural sites of Bhagsu and McLeodganj.
